The Reinterpretation Of Movie Poster Design

Despite the reliance of online promotion and social media presence, the poster design is still considered a key element in the marketing of a film. The aim is simple – to advertise and intrigue.

I have been inspired by the work of Olly Moss, a Winchester based illustrator, who has created a whole series of custom movie posters. We are all familiar with certain classics, so here are some of his reinterpretations of iconic posters.

Above: Star Wars – Return of the Jedi, Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry and Frank Capra’s Mr Smith goes to Washington.

The simplicity of his style strips back the content of the original posters to create clean, bold and imaginative illustrations.

Above: An American Werewolf in London, The Dark Knight Rises and Walt Disney’s The Jungle Book.

Having featured in Empire magazine, a following from Hollywood studios and a commission from Marvel Entertainment, it would be easy to compare Moss to the late Saul Bass – one of the greatest film poster designers to date.
