Surface Design Show 2024; Our Top Picks

Last week, our team had the opportunity to attend the Surface Design Show 2024, an inspiring event that showcases the latest trends and innovations in surface design. The show was a diverse and immersive experience, encompassing a wide range of materials, textures, and applications.

One of the notable aspects of the show was the emphasis on sustainable and environmentally friendly materials. Many exhibitors highlighted their commitment to eco-conscious design, showcasing products that were both aesthetically pleasing and ethically produced. This aligns with Phoenix Wharf’s own values of sustainability and responsible sourcing.

For us, the show reinforced the importance of staying abreast of emerging trends and technologies while remaining dedicated to sustainable practices.

We are excited to share with you below, our top picks that we look forward to incorporating into our future projects.

Amourcoat - Acoustic Plaster

“Improving wellness in interior spaces by creating calm and inviting environments”

Armourcoats Acoustic Plaster - https://armourcoat.com/en/products/acoustic-plaster/

Armourcoats stand was one of the first we visited during our trip. We loved their display of tactile materials and the information on offer from their knowledgeable staff. As soon as we stepped into the small alcove featuring their Acoustic Plaster finish, we were completely blown away. It transported us from a busy and buzzing exhibit hall to somewhere that was serene and calm.

Unlike traditional acoustic treatments, Armourcoat’s Acoustic Plaster seamlessly integrates into the architecture of a space, providing a smooth and monolithic finish. It allows for customisable aesthetic options, including different textures and colours, while still maintaining acoustic performance. This product is made in the UK from a minimum of 72% recycled material and can be installed seamlessly over large expanses of both flat and curved surfaces.

The clever composition of this product reduces echo and reverberation and would be a welcomed addition to a space such as the food court that we recently designed for The Univesity of Bristol’s, Temple Quarter Campus. Its robust composition is durable and impact-resistant which makes it a long-lasting solution for improving acoustics in high-traffic areas without the risk of damage.

We were thrilled to bring this product back to the studio and make it a permanent addition to our sample library.

Stratum Designs - Inlay Composite

“We believe in a forward thinking, natural blend of traditional and contemporary making.”

Stratum Designs Inlay Composite - https://www.stratumdesigns.co.uk/

We saw a sample of Stratum Designs, inlay composite in the literature received from Surface Design Show in advance of the event. We made it our mission to hunt them down - and what we found did not disappoint!

Stratum Designs uses a combination of reclaimed timbers, machinable metals and recycled ocean plastics to create a playful dance of loose repetition in their sustainable ‘modern marquetry’. The combination of their hand-picked materials and intricate making process results in a truly remarkable product that commands attention.

Their technique produces completely unique marquetry results every time, and can be fully customisable allowing a preference of material choices or colours to respond to a particular aesthetic. At Phoenix Wharf, we love shining a spotlight on emerging talent and would be thrilled to use Stratum Designs inlay composite in a project as unique as this product - watch this space!

Amron Architectural

“Breathtaking metal for architecture and interior design.”

Amron’s stand was the one that stood out to us. Not only did it exhibit a stunning array of metal products and finishes but the staff were engaging and well informed. Amron produces an extensive collection of metal finishes that can be used internally or externally.

The embossed and perforated sheets are a versatile and durable option for a variety of interior design applications. With their sleek and modern appearance, they can enhance the aesthetic appeal of any hospitality space. Available in a range of finishes and colours, these metal panels offer flexibility in design, allowing for both bold, statement-making interiors and subtle, sophisticated accents.

We fell in love with Amron’s Kriskadecor chains which can be utilised in various shapes, patterns, and colours. There are almost no limits to what could be achieved for Kriskadecor ceilings. The links can be used to design in personality to a project, they offer different density options, which allows the freedom to create inspiring spaces, in different colours or even with custom images. On first look, the individual links are somewhat clunky, but on mass are completely transformed into the most elegant ceiling drapery features.

Amron’s company ethos is to influence choice, engage, and inspire and that’s exactly what they did for the PW team at Surface Design Show this year.

At Phoenix Wharf, we remain committed to delivering innovative, sustainable, and aesthetically captivating surface design solutions that resonate with our clients and the environments they inhabit. And it is upon visiting shows such as Surface Design that we gain the product knowledge to do so.
